17 NOVEMBER 2011
Our apologies everyone, but there will be no Zumba classes this weekend. This includes Friday 6pm at Tauranga Girls College and Saturday at Merivale and the Mount. There were no scheduled classes for Sunday.
This is so that we can have all hands on deck for our show "Shine" at Baycourt Theatre on Saturday 19 November. For those of you who were considering coming to the show (and why wouldn't you?) you had better be fast as the 7pm show has sold out and the 10.30 and 2.30pm shows are selling well. Tickets can be purchsed at Baycourt or on-line at http://ticketdirect.co.nz/ using "Shine" as your search term.
Once again - sorry to those who won't get their fix this weekend
WEDNESDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2011
Wow, it’s been a long time since your last Zumba newsletter – you must be having withdrawals!
Sunday class this weekend – 10.30am QEYC Memorial Park
Our Dance Schools Annual Performances - Baycourt Sat 19 Nov
That’s next weekend!! ‘Shine’ promises to delight and entertain with a variety of dance styles (including Zumba of course!) with 400 students aged from 2 years of age to 85 years of age! On top of dance we have some fantastic musicians and actors on board and of course there will be a good dose of humour! Please come and see the efforts of our blood, sweat and tears at this live, local event. Tickets are on sale at Baycourt Theatre or online through www.ticketdirect.co.nz and for a family of 4 it’s cheaper than going to the movies! The are 3 performance times – 10.30am, 2.30pm and 7.00pm
Pink Party Fundraiser Class – Fri 24 November Tauranga Girls College Gym 6pm
This is a special fundraiser class for one of our Zumba participants that has suffered from breast cancer and sadly her condition is now terminal. Wendy has never been out of the country or on a plane for that matter and has always wanted to visit Melbourne so we’d love to help make her wish come true. Wendy is only 43 and has dedicated her life to caring for her ill mother. Wendy is unaware of this special fundraiser & has been left off this email distribution so please don’t mention it to her. Please come dressed ridiculously as possible in as much pink as possible and give as generously as possible. Bring friends and family to support the cause.
Zumba participants performing at Baycourt
Important – please note there will be a practise this Sat morning after Merivale class as per usual but NO practise at the Mount in the afternoon as we had said there would be. Sorry for the confusion, please notify your friends performing of the change as they may not receive this newsletter. Bring the clothing you intend to wear so Teejay and Tarryn can check it.
Omokoroa Class News

Fundraising for mental health awareness
Mental Health Awareness Week is taking place between 10-16 October and is celebrating the five winning ways to wellbeing; connect, give, take notice, learn and be active, all of which are also elements of Zumba fitness classes.
Next week over 70 ZumbaHappiness classes will be taking place nationwide with more than 1000 people participating.
Funds raised will provide free information and support for people with experience of mental illness. Mental Health Foundation work includes: depression awareness and suicide prevention information, mentally healthy workplaces, programmes to counter stigma & discrimination, mental health promotion, and more. Through their programmes, website and social media they reach over 10,000 people a month.
Next Tuesday 11 Oct Zumba Tauranga will donate a percentage of profits from the classes at Greerton Hall to the Mental Health Foundation. There will also be a collection box available if you wish to make a donation. Please see www.mentalhealth.org.nz for further info. Brochures and pamphlets will be available on the night.

Two hour class
Well done to all that braved the 2 hour class on Sunday. What a fab turnout, are you fit or what!
Thank you....
Tarryn, Rachael & Lisa for covering for Teejay and I whilst we were away for a week. We were in China for work/holiday. It was an incredible experience but it’s always so nice to get back to our beautiful, clean, safe, relaxed wee town – we are all so lucky!
Mount Zumba
As our luck at the Mount goes we were double booked on a Monday night at the Mt Senior Citz hall with a group that have been using it for 2 years. So we are on the move again! On Mon 19 & 26 Sep we will be back at our old venue at 36d MacDonald St for 2 weeks only. These classes will start at 6.15pm. From 3 Oct onwards we will be at the new Arataki Community Centre, on the corner of Zambuk Way, off Grenada Street & next to Baywave. SO......
Mondays 6.15-7.15pm: Freedom Centre 36d MacDonald St (19 & 26 Sep)
Mondays 6.00-7.00pm: Arataki Community Centre (from 3 October)

Ideally we would have a permanent venue with all 3 Mount classes at them but none of the above can accommodate us on a Mon night and Wed & Sat mornings.
As you know Mount venues are hard to come by. We have moved so often and it’s becoming quite a headache!
If anyone knows of a venue we would love to hear from you. We don’t need a full term lease as we are only there a few hours a week. The venue needs to be fairly large to cope with energetic exercisers! Something like a hangar or large warehouse with a decent floor surface would be great. We are happy to work in with an existing business if possible. Call us!
This Sunday....
18th September we will be holding a free ½ hour Zumba class as part of the rugby world cup’s REAL TAURANGA festival, on the strand carpark at 10.30am. You will see a big marquee and stage, that’s where we’ll be, come and join us!
Bethlehem this coming Monday 19 Sep
No classes due to the hall being used by the school. Come to the Mount instead! 6.15pm start at 36d MacDonald St – a huge venue to accommodate the 2 classes!
Dates to note:
Sunday 18 September – Free ½ hour Zumba class as part of the rugby world cup’s REAL TAURANGA festival, on the strand 10.30am
Monday 19 September – NO Zumba classes at Bethlehem Primary due to the hall being used for an art exhibition
Saturday 24 September – Keep this day free at 12pm in Greerton for something special (top secret!). Will only take 7 minutes! Details to follow at classes.
Sunday 25 September – 1 hour Sunday class
7 September 2011
Two hour class this Sunday
11 September 10.30 am - 12.30 pm– QEYC Memorial Hall at Memorial park, corner of 11th Ave & Devonport Rd. Definitely not Sat 10th as previously advertised. This is a great opportunity to test your fitness or kick start your spring fitness regime (you do have a spring fitness regime don’t you?!?!?!?). This class is the cost of a regular one hour Zumba class so an absolute bargain and not to be missed!!!
Please note the change of venue for Sundays, no longer at Merivale Action Centre.
Friday toning at Te Puna
Teejay is unable to take this class this week (Fri 9 Sep) so Rachael will be doing a regular Zumba class during toning (9.15am-10.50am) as she isn’t qualified to teach toning (yet!). The regular Zumba class will be on at 10.00am as per usual. So great news if you love Zumba – go for a double class! Sorry for any inconvenience.

Wednesdays 9.30-10.30am Mount Senior Citizens hall

Em Koteka Wiki
I met Emm at the Zumba Instructors Convention in Orlando last year. Emm was a charismatic, energetic, fun loving, real person with an awesome laugh. I’m sure her master class here in Tauranga will be a fast paced energetic one. Let’s show her what little old Tauranga is made of! - Carla
Born in the Cook Islands, Koteka-Wiki grew up speaking the native Maori language. Before moving to New Zealand in 2005, Koteka-Wiki spent 16 years travelling all over the world with her kiwi husband Pae Wiki (who works for the U.N. as Chief Security Coordinator for East Africa) and their three daughters. In each of the countries where her husband’s work took them (including Israel, Southern Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Croatia, Cambodia and Kenya) Koteka-Wiki taught fitness and dancing classes. She attributes her passion and dedication to fitness and dance as the result of growing up in a French Tahitian /German /Polynesian family surrounded by athletes, dancers, singers and performers.
In 2007 while living in Westport and largely devoting her time to being a stay-at-home mum, Koteka-Wiki first heard of Zumba. The dance element is what originally drew Koteka-Wiki to Zumba.
Koteka-Wiki devotes much time fundraising for breast cancer awareness and cure having witnessed the disease first hand in her family. Her mother’s youngest sister died from the disease 4 years ago at the age of 54. Currently both her uncle’s wife and her father’s second wife are undergoing treatment for breast cancer while another aunt continues to recover from a double mastectomy last year. Many members of Koteka-Wikis Zumba classes have also undergone personal battles with breast cancer. Since the nature of Zumba is to promote a positive, uplifting and healthy lifestyle Emm wants to bring the same positive, uplifting and healthy lifestyle to breast cancer survivors who need various resources, adequate education and the tools to live a healthy life. Lack of exercise, good nutrition and medical help for a breast cancer survivor can lead to recurrence, depression and other diseases.
Currently, Koteka-Wiki is working on a proposal to provide breast cancer survivors with Zumba lessons free of cost. She feels that it is important that not only breast cancer research be addressed but follow-up support for survivors as well.
As a female and mother of three daughters, having lost a fourth in infancy to meningitis due to lack of proper medical treatment in the Cook Islands, Koteka-Wiki is concerned with the future. Her hope is that there will be a cure before her daughters ever confront the disease. She is dedicated to doing whatever she can to raise awareness and support. Koteka-Wiki, is part of the all volunteer-run SPINODYSSEY/ZUMBA® team which donates 100% of all pledges from the event to breast cancer causes.
Emm now runs her own dance/fitness studio in New York, USA.

IMPORTANT MOUNT VENUE CHANGES
Saturday morning Zumba classes will be at our 14B Hocking Street venue starting from tomorrow Sat 6 August. This is a great, close to new venue with ample parking.
Monday nights and Wednesday morning Zumba classes will be at Mount Mosiac Church, 37 Newton Street, Mount. This is an excellent venue with ample parking and a cafe they are looking to open especially for you cafe addicts after a Wednesday morning class!
These classes start here this coming Monday 8 August and Wednesday 10 August.
All classes at the above venues will start 15 mins later for a week or two to give those that have gone to our old venue on McDonald St the time to get there. We will have someone at McDonald St directing you to the new venues if you happen to forget.
If you have children attend our Rhythmz Dance Co dance classes at the Mount, they will all be held at the Hocking street venue from now on.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
Click on the below addresses for Google maps of the new venues:
Please let all your Zumba friends know of the changes just in case they don't receive this message.
PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO SUNDAY CLASS THIS WEEKEND (Sun 7 August)
Have a great weekend - hip hip hooray!!!
Wednesday 3 August
Attention to dates is a failing of mine, there are just so darn many of them, like 365 each year, and 3650 every 10 years! So easy to get confused! So easy to forget birthdays and anniversaries!
So!!! no Sunday class this week as it doesn't fall on the 2nd or 4th of the month as we have been consistently doing for some time. There are exceptions now and again though, like the masterclass coming up with Emm Koteka Wiki from New York on Sun 21 August (the 3rd Sun of the month!). Confused? Me too!! Just don't turn up this Sunday alright?!?!?! Next Sunday will be fine.
MOUNT VENUE
We had our first trial this morning at Hocking Street and unfortunately for Monday nights and Wednesday mornings it's just not going to be big enough. For Saturday morning classes which are much smaller 14B Hocking Street will be fine and will start there this Sat 6th August.
For Monday nights and Wednesay mornings we will get the details of the new venue to you as soon as possible. Sincere apologies for any inconvenience, we know it's a pain and hope to get it all sorted asap.
Just a reminder that we will be starting all Mount classes 15 minutes late for the next week or so until everyone is aware of the new changes. We will have someone at our old MacDonald St venue pointing you in the right direction should you forget.
SUNDAY 31 JULY
Mount Update
This Monday 1 August from 6-7pm we will have our last class at our current MacDonald Street venue. Then from Wed 3 August we will be in a new venue at the Mount – 14B Hocking Street which is just a couple of minutes away from MacDonald Street. Hocking Street is off Hewletts Road. It’s a bit of a nuisance to get to because of the concrete median strip on Hewletts Road so depending on which way you come from you may need to do a U turn at the lights at Waimarie Street. Please see this google map for further details:
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
The sign for Hocking Street is easily missed so please allow yourself extra time to find us the first time you come. Keep an eye out for our red Zumba flag. Heaps of parking onsite and an unused cafe which we are allowed to use to continue the Wednesday and Saturday morning coffee ritual!!
Wednesday 3rd, Saturday 6th and Mon 8th of August classes here will start 15 minutes later than usual to give people that may have gone to the MacDonald St venue the time to get there.
Please let anyone you know that attends the Mount classes about this change.
Dates to note:
Monday 1 August – Last class at our current Mount venue at MacDonald St
Wednesday 3 August – First class at our new Mount venue – 14B Hocking Street, Mount Maunganui (see above for further details and map).
Sunday 7 August – Sunday class at Merivale Action Centre 10.30am – 1 hour class.
Saturday 13 August – Fundraiser class for Riding for the disabled.
Sunday 21st August - Masterclass with Emm Koteka Wiki. Time and Venue to be confirmed. Tickets will go on sale soon for this one and a half hour master class. See below for a little about Emm.
Monday 29 August – Our team of instructors are back on Good Morning this week sharing Zumba with New Zealand.
Saturday 10 September – 2 hour class

Here’s a little about Phillip, from Phillip:
My Name is Phillip Thomas-Sam, Born and raised in Huntly, finished high school and went forth to get my degree in English literature... after finishing my degree I found myself a little lost, unsure what to do with myself so consequently I packed on the pounds (both before and after I finished my studies I must admit, but even more so once I had finished). I moved back to Huntly and jumped on board the family business which was my mother’s Gym she owned and operated. Initially I was just desk and phone, reception work essentially and I found myself feeling more self conscious about my size, especially working in a Gym environment, but nothing I tried really motivated me, I quickly lost interest in things like "Step", "yoga", "Pilates"......then one day a cousin of mine mentioned she'd heard of something called Zumba.. I was.. sceptical at first I must admit (this was before actually seeing it or trying it)... she worked on me for MONTHS trying to convince me to try it... eventually she cornered me at home by bringing up the Cardio Live DVD... From the Moment I saw it I was hooked.. I knew I'd found something that could really motivate me, something I could truly love and look forward to doing... It’s now been almost 2 years since I first started Zumba and I love it just as much now as I did then... plus I’m roughly 40kgs lighter, lol. My body is still a work in progress but I’ve reached the place where I’m enjoying myself, the way I look and how I feel as person. So from my beginnings as a fumbling student unsure of what I was doing (I don’t have a dance background unless you count 5 months or basic ballroom when I was 11yrs old) I have now reached the point where I’m a Zumba jammer. :-)
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!
Zumba love, Phillip
Your Zumba story
An evening of understanding and inspiration. Hear how your fellow Zumba participant’s lives have changed since starting Zumba. We’ve heard so many heartfelt, motivating, interesting stories and we think you need to share them! Your story could motivate and inspire others to make their lives more fulfilling. We want to hear from you! Maybe you’ve lost 44kg!!! (Laurel!) Maybe Zumba has given you the confidence to chase the job (or the man!) of your dreams? Or given you something to look forward to or helped you stop your anti depressant or diabetes medication or encouraged you to make positive changes in your life etc etc etc! Don’t underestimate YOUR story. And if you’re not keen to speak in front of a crowd we would be happy to relay your story for you. It will be an evening of fun (and maybe a little sadness) and a great way for you to get to know those people that you sweat next to on a weekly basis. We plan to have a couple of guest speakers speak on topics of (hopefully!) interest to you.

WHO IS IT??
Ever seen the person below at Zumba??
She is the multi talented Tracey McDonald (graphic designer) who managed our dance shows at Baycourt last year. Tracey can also be found in various theatre productions around town. She sings beautifully (like a songbird), with husky, woody undertones. The multi talented Tracey also plays the guitar (and the African drum of course). And if you have the flash mob DVD you will see her right up the front playing up to the camera (she's not shy - a born performer). Tracey is one of those people you could never get sick of - heaps of fun, kind, giving, silly and an absolute delight to have at Zumba - always smiling and laughing. We love Tracey McDonald...

IT'S DECEMBER!
Thank you Jules for the following poem:
Santa is a Zumba Dancer
I went to the Stock Xchange Bar late on Christmas Eve,
There was a party there like you wouldn't believe;
The beer was flowin', the place was loud,
A man could get lost just workin' the crowd;
I was on my second round and what did I see?
An old man with a beard was smiling at me;
He wore a red coat and he drove a sleigh;
Man, could that stranger slip and sway!
Santa is a Zumba dancer, burnin' up the floor,
He's ringin' those bells, and he's ready to roar;
Santa is a Zumba dancer, and he's got the beat,
Better make way for those magic feet.
I thought I was crazy, couldn't believe my eyes,
It's the cocktail talkin', then I realized
Santa himself was out on the town,
Kickin' up his heels before he made his rounds;
He was a hit with the women under the mistletoe,
They sat on his lap, now wouldn't you know;
He took down their number, wouldn't you bet;
This was a Christmas they'd never forget.
I watched him take off in his turbo sleigh,
It had bucket seats and a microwave;
His side-kick was an elf in a mini skirt,
She wore a pointed hat and a sequined shirt;
I heard him shout as he hit the sky,
"Merry Christmas, y'all,I've got to fly!
Next Christmas Eve, I'll be ready for more,
Babe, I'll meet you out on the Zumba Dance floor!"

- We have had requests from people wanting to read the "Ode to Zumba" that Laurel read at the party. So, thanks, Laurel - here it is:
In January this young girl
Decided to give Zumba a twirl
Line Dancing was far too slow
She needed something to really make her go
The music and rhythms hit the mark
And gave Laurel back her spark
The one she’d lost some time ago
When her rotator cuff decided to blow
Golf was out – the doctor said she’d have to rest
For her shoulders sake it was the best
That’s the time her body shape changed
And went into the larger range
This then over weight chick
Knew Zumba would definitely do the trick
Along with Weight Watchers and the Waka Ama lot
She’d soon be looking like a dot
Of her former self – the girl so big
Would easily fit into the Waka rig
These Zumba classes with TJ and Carla up the front
Made this old girl’s body start to pump
Soon she began to keep up with the beat
Arms, body, hands and feet
And the brain, it was working over time
Both sides at once – definitely a sign
That your Zumba classes work for us
We know we haven’t missed the bus
The toning class is quite a hit
Another way to keep us fit
My biceps are now taking shape
And firming up, make no mistake
That TJ has eagle eyes
It’s just amazing what he spies
Those dulcet tones from him up there
“C’mon you lot – look I’m down here
The Breast Cancer night was oh so neat
In pink TJ you looked a treat
The shorts you wore were oh so short
My god young man, you’re such a sport
The squats you did were not as low
As we normally see you go
But we all enjoyed our night in pink
Before heading off to have a drink
So TJ and Carla I’d like you to know
That there’s nowhere else we’d rather go
To get the workout, the fun and the concessions
Of your absolutely amazing Zumba sessions
This 60 year old Zumba holic – now quite trim
Intends to stay completely slim
What you’ve done for me is quite amazing
I’m a shell of my former self – life saving
So to both of you, thanks a heap
I’ll see you at Zumba next week.
Ooh and one more thing before I go
TJ and Carla, I’d like you to know
That this quote from a Westlife song that I’ll recall
Definitely says it all
“You’ve raised me up so I can stand on mountains
You’ve raised me up to walk on stormy seas
I am strong because you were my shoulder
You’ve raised me up to all that I can be”

Introducing the 3 Zumbateers
This month we are profiling 3 friends who all ♥♥ ZUMBA

Michelle Buckley (Centre) started Zumba on 14 June after getting sick of the kilos sneaking on through lack of exercise and eating badly while sitting for long hours in a car while travelling for her job. Now, instead of feeling lethargic all the time, she just can’t get enough of Zumba. She has loads more energy, has lost weight and is eating better because she feels better. Michelle has never lasted at exercise before but Zumba is the whole package for her with fun, unpretentious classes and encouraging people around.
Rachel Griffiths (Left) is a self-confessed Zumba addict! She participates in around five classes a week (last week it was seven!). What she likes most about Zumba is the Latin dance rhythms, the friends she’s made and the fact that everyone has so much fun together! She’s lost seven kilos since she started, feels more toned and fits her clothes better....Yet she continues to eat and drink whatever she likes – proof that Zumba really does work!
Jan Pendleton (Right) started Zumba in October last year as part of an exercise and weight loss plan. Eight months later and she’s another addict. Jan thinks Carla and Teejay are awesome instructors, explaining each routine very well and making the class friendly and fun. She also loves the Tuesday morning 7 a.m. class with Hayley, Jan Zumbas at least 3 times a week and finds the friendly faces at the classes just add to her enjoyment

Our latest Zumba stars are Josie Bidois & Maihi Swainson!
Ten years ago Josie was given a serious cancer diagnosis. Today, in spite of having a tumour on the spine, Josie and grandson Maihi go cycling, skateboarding and zumbaing together. Fighting the battle of the bulge has also seen Josie take up Boxfit and change her eating habits. Josie goes to Zumba about 3 times a week including the advanced class and loves the energy and enthusiasm of TeeJay and Carla. She likes that she can have fun and meet people while getting a workout – who can keep still once that music starts? And can you believe that Josie is 65!! Incredible – keep up the good work!
‘Why I like Zumba’ – by Maihi Swainson, 9
1. I like the music
2. I love dancing
3. Carla is funny
4. I have fun
5. I meet lots of people
For sharing their story Josie and Maihi receive 5 free classes each.

Meet Laurel, another Zumba Success Story
Laurel has always been a sporting kind of girl; tennis, tae bo, golf. But after injuries stopped her in her tracks she became overweight and inactive.
Just walking to the letterbox was difficult. She took up Waka Ama and kayaking as exercise but the difficulty she had getting in and
out meant she spent more time in the water than on the kayak! On May 13th 2009 Laurel joined Weightwatchers, then a 50 plus heart foundation
exercise programme while continuing her waka paddling. Then she found Zumba. Coming from a musical and sporting family, Zumba rang all the right bells for her.
Now Laurel is a different person.
She
- Has lost 35.3 kgs
- Has energy to burn
- Is in the Tauranga Golden Masters Waka Ama Squad
- Can wear really nice clothes
- Can hold her head up high and be proud
